“Never Get Lost”: June 2 at BookPeople
The Forrest Four-Cast: May 31, 2018
Kudos to BookPeople and Bill Kilday (pictured above) for adding an engaging and immersive experience to a standard book release event for “Never Lost Again: The Google Mapping Revolution That Sparked New Industries and Augmented Our Reality.” After a reading, signing and Q&A with the audience, participants (who buy a copy of the book) will be invited to join a scavenger hunt, both inside the store and in the surrounding area.
Events take place on Saturday afternon, June 2. The reading begins at 2 pm and the scavenger hunt at 3 pm. Prizes will be awarded at a reception that starts at 4 pm.
A scavenger hunt is an ideal real-world example of the mapping revolution Kilday explored in his highly-anticipated book, which was released earlier this week.
Kilday, the VP Marketing and Live Events for Niantic, takes readers behind-the-scenes to deliver a first person look at the people who created the tools that gave us Google Earth, Google Maps and Pokémon GO.
Kilday, born in Houston as the youngest of eight children, now lives in Austin with his family. In his compelling, personal anecdote-packed tale, he follows Keyhole from its startup creation by small-town Texas boy John Hanke, through years of struggle to the company’s big break when CNN used the technology to cover the first invasion of Iraq. Google bought in and relaunched the software as Google Maps and Google Earth. Hanke’s original company then spun out of Google, and is now responsible for Pokémon GO and the upcoming Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.
More than just a look at where we’ve come so far, “Never Lost Again” also looks ahead at the prospects for emerging map-based technologies including augmented reality and driverless cars.
