Salman Rushdie in ATX on Sept 6
The Forrest Four-Cast: August 26, 2019
On Friday, September 6 at 7:00 pm at the First Baptist Church (901 Trinity St), catch international best-selling author Salman Rushdie in conversation about “Quichotte” with Austin-based reviewer Maya Smart.
Inspired by the Cervantes classic of the same general name, this novel centers around Sam DuChamp, a mediocre writer of spy thrillers. DuChamp creates the character Quichotte, a courtly, addled salesman obsessed with television, who falls in impossible love with a TV star. Together with his (imaginary) son Sancho, Quichotte sets off on a picaresque quest across America to prove worthy of her hand, gallantly braving the tragicomic perils of an age where anything can happen. Meanwhile his creator, in a midlife crisis, has equally urgent challenges of his own.
Rushdie is the author of 13 previous novels, including “Shame,” “The Satanic Verses,” and “Haroun and the Sea of Stories.” My favorite of these 13 works is the 2010 release “Midnight’s Children,” because the telepathic powers of the protagonist Saleem Sinai anticipates and foretells many of the problems and pitfalls of the age of social media.
To attend the Friday, Sept 6 event in Austin, you must purchase a ticket. Each ticket admits one person, plus includes a copy of “Quichotte.” The Salman Rushie event is presented by BookPeople.
