Casey Gerald’s life has been used to describe the classic America success story.
Growing up gay in South Oak Cliff, Texas, in a deeply religious evangelical Christian community with parents who battled drugs and mental health issues and were pretty much gone by the time he was 12, Gerald somehow manage to harness his ambition, smarts and athletic skill to earn a scholarship to Yale. There, he captained the football team and went on to Lehman Brothers and Harvard Business School, founded a non-profit aimed at encouraging entrepreneurs and toyed with running for Congress. But, as the title of his new memoir says, “There Will Be No Miracles Here.”
He book explores what he calls the cracks in his life that led to him stepping away from the spotlight to write this book, and the cracks fracturing the nation that prevent so many from finding a good life. His autobiography doesn’t offer straightforward guidelines for change, rather he hopes it suggests ways people can address spiritual and psychological healing and demonstrates how the written word can power meaningful and lasting personal transformation.
At SXSW 2016, Gerald spoke before President Obama and talked about what happens when doubt comes into your life. His book extends this discussion, asking what might happen when we question our preconceived notions of accomplishment and more.
He’ll be reading from his intensely honest memoir at 7:00 pm Thursday, October 11, at BookPeople in Austin (603 North Lamar). His compelling lifestory is reason enough to attend this special event.
