Wayne Kramer goes way “behind the music” in his first memoir, “The Hard Stuff: Dope, Crime, the MC5, and My Life of Impossibilities.” The acclaimed guitarist and cofounder of the Detroit proto-punk band the MC5 will appear at BookPeople in Austin at 7 pm on Thursday, Sept. 27, in conversation with fellow musician Alejandro Escovedo.

Now 70, Kramer has led a life of legend. From appearing on the cover of Rolling Stone in 1969, to disbanding three years later, the MC5 reflected times of radical cultural, political and urban upheaval. Kramer’s story will resonate with citizens of today facing another period of national turmoil.

During the Vietnam War, Kramer helped form the White Panther Party to support racial and economic equality, and became a target of the FBI. Kramer’s revolutionary story makes stops in Detroit’s glory days, a gritty East Village, Key West, Nashville and Los Angeles, with stints in prison and battles with drugs. With Billy Bragg, Kramer founded the non-profit Jail Guitar Doors USA, which aims to rehabilitate prison inmates by through music.

He’ll be speaking with revered Austin-based singer-songwriter Alejandro Escovedo, whose life story has contributed to his activism around immigration issues.

Kramer has performed at SXSW several times in the past, and is a great example of the kind of once-in-a-lifetime experiences available only at SXSW Music.
