SXSW Sessions That Honor MLK’s Dream

The Forrest Four-Cast: January 16, 2017

  1. The Business Case for LGBT Equality. The recent bathroom bill in North Carolina (as well as similar legislation that is currently being debated for Texas) are a major setback for LGBT rights. As morally reprehensible as laws like these are, they are also bad for the economy. Also noteworthy is “Sharing the Way to Global LGBTI Equality” session.
  2. In Defense of Cyborg Civil Rights. If we can ever learn to treat other humans with more compassion, then we can move along to considering our actions towards the many robots who will soon populate our lives. Actually, this session’s focus on augmented beings should create some interesting context to compare and contrast our current people to people interactions.
  3. Mind the Gap: How to Increase Gender Pay Equality. Part of the Workplace track, this solo presentation reveals data confirming the gender pay gap by country, industry, and occupation, and gives practical tips and advice for negotiating salary and best practices for employers to leverage data and modify pay practices to avoid conscious and unconscious bias.
  4. Overcoming Bias: Relationships Across Difference. This workshop will help you challenge your many unconscious assumptions and biases — and broaden your experience to encountering people, cultures, and ideas outside of your comfort zone. What could be more SXSW and what could be more important in 2017?
